THE STATE I'M IN

Audio: Defence and discrimination

Background Briefing, ABC radio (mp3)
American security laws based on where a person was born mean some Australians can't work in defence industries in Australia. It's against our laws - but it's like it or lump it...

The American regulations assume that no matter what kind of citizenship you have, or how long you have lived away from home, your loyalties are always going to be based on your country of birth...

Lorena Allam: It's a global phenomenon which is making countries nervous about the potential and the politics of these new communities of migrants, or diasporas.

Michael Fullilove: Host countries are becoming increasingly aware and often uncomfortable about the new communities in their midst.
So a government allows people into their country whom their defence department acknowledges will have loyalties first to their country of birth. Strange. And these people are also allowed to vote, outbreed the natives, form political parties, and take jobs in police, government and courts. Strange inconsistency. It seems that a slow takeover, balkanisation, and ethnic conflict, are all OK, so long as you just don't bomb us in the process.

Videos: everyday racist conflict on the streets of Britain

August 21, 2008
The politically correct will try and identify who starts the racism in each incident, but the real message for Australia is that life in Britain appears to be a melting pot of simmering hatred (from all sides) just looking for an outlet to explode. And this is where Australia is headed with unrelenting diverse immigration.

Northern Rivers, NSW, a refugee sanctuary

Welcome to Sanctuary Northern Rivers! Sanctuary Northern Rivers Inc. is a community based group situation in the northern rivers region of NSW. Lismore is our home base, with many of our supporters from towns and supporters from the surrounding towns and communities.

It has been our privilege since 2003 to represent the aspiration of our community in supporting refugees. The main effort of our endeavours has been to assist refugees gain a humanitarian visa in order that they may find a home where security and harmony and peace provides them with a new hope for their future. Indeed, it has been an honour to walk with these refugees in along this road...

Sanctuary Northern Rivers was established to bring refugees to Lismore and depends on volunteers from the community. About half the national annual intake of 13,000 refugees must be sponsored, which means that the sponsoring organisation pays the refugees’ airfare and assists with their resettlement into the community.

Sanctuary Northern Rivers, founded by Dr Michael Douglas, has helped relocate about 100 Sudanese refugees.

Here are some new faces that Michael Douglas and associates have brought to the Northern Rivers.

What about a white sanctuary for people who don't want to live in diversity? Will whites get any native title?

Non-English-speaking hotspots in Australia's cities

August 21, 2008
... Sydney's Hurstville ... where 43 per cent of the locals speak Chinese... At this rate, Hurstville will be entirely Chinese-speaking by the middle of the 2020s...

... Arabic is spoken at home by 40 per cent of the population in Chullora ... in the city's southwest.

... Chinese speakers have invaded Hurstville about twice as fast as Arabic speakers have moved into Chullora.

... Cabramatta ... where 35 per cent of the locals speak Vietnamese at home...

... Melbourne CBD ... now has 29 per cent of people who speak Chinese at home.

The truly extraordinary feature of Melbourne's new Chinese residents is the speed with which they have arrived...

... this group, as early as next decade, will have the wherewithal to display their success in new housing designed to reflect not Australian aspirationalism, but middle-class Chinese and Arab ideals.
And housing designs are the least of their ideals we have to worry about.

Jobs an issue for Sudanese, Latrobe Valley

21/08/2008
"They said they are facing some employment problems but they wanted to learn firefighting techniques so that they can join the CFA and actually be part of the community.'' ...

"Employment is a real issue and they are trying to find a job that would be good for them but they are happy with the education and recreational opportunities in the community that they get here in the Latrobe Valley,'' Mr Buckley said.
Don't we have labour shortage across the rural sector? Or is this a case of employers preferring whites?

Guest workers making up shortage, or fueling expansion?

August 22, 2008
The prospect of unskilled migrant workers coming to Tasmania might seem unfair and unnecessary after yesterday's announcement of job losses at the Cadbury chocolate factory but the fact is that farmers across Australia suffer from a chronic shortage of labour and have done for years.

In some areas, fruit has to be left to rot because not enough reliable pickers can be found. It is part of a wider labour shortage that is likely to get worse in the next few years as the workforce shrinks and the number of retirees swells...

Tasmania has bright prospects in this sector, developing niche markets in fruit and vegetables. Producers could take advantage of the guest workers scheme but only if they do it properly.
The article begins by discussing a labour shortage, and then ends with the tone of "bright prospects ... developing" i.e. a tone of expansion. The guest workers aren't even here yet and the program is already fueling ideas beyond it's purpose.

Migrant push 'a recipe for disaster' - Nelson

23/08/2008
"... Rudd is bringing in a massive surge ... at the same time as jobs are disappearing, a recipe for disaster." The Government announced a 20per cent increase in migration numbers in the budget, from 159,000 in 2007-08 to an estimated 190,300 in 2008-09, in order to deal with chronic labour shortages and wages inflation pressure.

The budget also forecast an increase in the unemployment rate from 4.3 per cent to 4.75 per cent a rise of more than 100,000 people, the Opposition claims...

"Why is it beyond the wit in this country, when we've got half a million people still unemployed, that we have to bring in people from Pacific island nations to do this work?" Mr Nelson asked yesterday...

Coalition figures point to Britain as an example of government mismanagement of an immigration program leading to a loss of public confidence in the system and an upsurge in racial problems.

In one scene, as hundreds of women and some children come to pray, a preacher calls for adulterers, homosexuals, women who act like men and Muslim converts to other faiths to be killed, saying: "Kill him, kill him. You have to kill him, you understand. This is Islam."

Channel 4 also said that in the same mosque, "the reporter visits the bookshop and discovers books and DVDs still on sale, promoting extremist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic and intolerant messages".

Indonesia: attack forces Indonesian Christians off campus

August 22, 2008
JAKARTA — Hundreds of Christian theology students have been living in tents since a mob of angry Muslim neighbors stormed their campus last month wielding bamboo spears and hurling Molotov cocktails.

The incident comes amid growing concern that Indonesia's tradition of religious tolerance is under threat from Islamic hard-liners.

In talks since the attack, the Arastamar Evangelical School of Theology has reluctantly agreed to shut its 20-year-old campus in east Jakarta, accepting an offer this week to move to a small office building on the other side of the Indonesian capital...

The government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, which relies on the support of Islamic parties in Parliament, is struggling to balance deep Islamic traditions and a secular constitution. With elections coming next April, the government seems unwilling to defend religious minorities, lest it be portrayed as anti-Islamic in what is the world's most populous Muslim-majority country.

Hezbollah TV live in Australia

August 21, 2008
THE federal government must consider "creative" ways to tackle an anti-semitic satellite television station's broadcasts being beamed into Australia, a leading Jewish figure says.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar television channel is broadcast into Australia from Indonesian company Indosat and carries talk shows and documentaries dedicated to anti-Israeli, anti-western and pro-militancy ideas.

It also carries children's programs and music videos along with calls for viewers to donate.

Audio: Evans - study shows migration boosts economy

Lyndal Curtis speaks with Immigration Minister
August 22, 2008
Immigration Minister Chris Evans speaks to Lyndal Curtis about a report which shows that with the exception of two groups, migrants contribute significantly to the economy.
Media Release, Chris Evans
Migration program boosts economy and eases skills shortage
A report by respected economic analyst Access Economics shows that new migrants to Australia deliver hundreds of millions of dollars to the Commonwealth budget and the broader economy every year.

In a speech to the Australian Mines and Metals Association in Perth today, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, said that the overall fiscal impact of migration is substantially positive and grows over time in real terms.

In its Migrant Fiscal Impact Model: 2008 Update, Access looked at the costs that migrants impose on health, education, welfare, employment and settlement services compared to the fiscal benefits from taxation and visa charges.

For the 2006-07 migration program, Access estimated a total benefit of $536 million in the first year, then another $856 million in year two, growing steadily over time to reach $1.34 billion by year 20.

‘Applying the same modelling to the 2007-08 migration program, the net fiscal benefit is $610 million in year one, $965 million in year two then growing to $1.5 billion by year 20,’ Senator Evans said.

‘The forecast for the 2008-09 migration program is for an $829 million benefit in the first year, $1.16 billion in the second year, then $1.8 billion by year 20.’

Senator Evans said the Access modelling dispelled the myth that new migrants imposed a huge impost on the taxpayer.

‘The positive fiscal impact is particularly pronounced for skilled migrants, which reflects their high rate of labour market participation and higher incomes which in turn leads to a high level of direct tax receipts,’ Senator Evans said.

‘Migrants also contribute to the broader economy through spending on goods and services.

‘As well as the economic benefits, skilled migrants help Australian employers fill critical labour gaps at a time many businesses are facing capacity constraints.

‘The bottom line is that our migration program is vital to keep the economy growing as well as helping Australian businesses overcome skills and labour shortages.

‘Australia is facing a demographic shift that will see more people retire than join the workforce so the permanent skilled migration program provides a stable, effective and targeted source of skilled workers.’

Australia’s migration program increased annually over the last decade under the previous government to the point where the 2007-08 migration program was the biggest provided by Australia since the 1960s.

The 2007-08 migration program comprised 108 540 places (68 per cent) in the skilled migration stream and 49 870 places (31 per cent) in the family migration stream. Another 13 000 refugee and humanitarian visas were granted in 2007-08.

Last year’s intake represents a seven per cent increase on the 2006-07 migration program which totalled 158 960 places, of which two thirds (97 920) were skilled migrants.

The 2008-09 migration and humanitarian program is expected to total 203 000 visa grants, with 133 500 allocated for skilled migrants, 13 500 places for refugee and humanitarian entrants and a further 56 500 places in the family stream.
The PDF report is at the above link. It's probably mostly propaganda. Ross Gittins says the per capita income gain from immigration is chicken feed, and the case against immigration is stronger than the rest of us realise. Ditto says the House of Lords. Harvard economist George Borjas said the debate over immigration actually shouldn’t be about the economic benefits, as they "seem much too small".

Indonesian Muslim hard-liner on trial for attack

August 21, 2008
JAKARTA: The leader of a hard-line Islamic group in Indonesia went on trial Thursday for allegedly mobilizing followers to attack demonstrators at a religious tolerance rally two months ago.

Members of the Islamic Defenders' Front — many clad in Islamic robes and headscarves — were caught on video attacking men, woman and children with bamboo sticks at the June 1 demonstration in Jakarta.

The 200 peaceful demonstrators included Christians and members of the Ahmadiyah minority Muslim sect, which the hard-liners consider heretical. They were gathered at the National Monument to celebrate the country's tradition of religious tolerance...

Moderate Muslims have called for the disbanding of the group, known by its Indonesian acronym FPI. It has a history of ransacking establishments considered un-Islamic.

Faith in liberal democracy to withstand potential ‘clashes’

August 22, 2008
Chris Berg
I admit to being very uncomfortable with those supposedly free market advocates who oppose immigration, for whatever reason. Too often the objections are so strained as to be suspicious. The idea that we should stop an individual from searching for work beyond the national borders of their birthplace simply because we believe that their culture is somehow incompatable with ours is a deeply illiberal position to hold. Our existing skilled migration scheme discriminates on the basis of education, and, by implication, wealth. That is, to my mind, already unconscionable; ‘liberals’ who propose further group discrimination on the basis of culture are even more worrying.

How does the free movement of people differ in any significant way from the free movement of goods or services? Surely we have enough faith in the strength of liberal democracy - and the persuasiveness of liberal civil society - to withstand potential ‘clashes’ of culture? The only concrete thing we ask of migrants is that they obey existing laws - and in this concern we already have an elaborate mechanism to monitor and assure compliance of all those on Australian shores regardless of their birthplace.

This is not merely apologetics. I suggest that not only is immigration practically beneficial, but we have a moral obligation to accept into our borders those who want to come. For individuals born in under-developed countries, simply crossing into the developed world can dramatically increase their potential salary, as well as allow them to experience the historically unprecedented living standards that we already enjoy.

The objections to expanded immigration seem nationalistic or economically illiterate at best, and immoral at worst.
Wow, Chris Berg sounds like a high priest of liberalism, a master of prostration, with an astounding level of faith in the persuasiveness of liberal civil society to prevent conflict. The free movement of people is no different from the movement of goods? Where does this faith come from? Does it come from history? Does it come from current affairs? Nobody knows. "Surely" you do?

Our nation better than One Nation?

August 22, 2008
Steve Lewis
Dr Nelson ... his populist stance against a Pacific guest worker scheme ... is outrageously shrill and just a tad racist. He's exhibiting elements of Hansonism as he panders to the lowest common denominator.

A guest worker scheme makes sense, not only for the positive effect it will have in easing acute labour shortages in the bush.

It should also pave the way for a pan-Pacific economic and trade pact...

Rudd's employment scheme, which will initially allow 2500 "guest workers" into Australia, is the first tranche of an eventual Pacific "common market"...

The smouldering mess that is Fijian democracy suggests a new Pacific path is needed to give nations a viable future.

Dr Nelson is barking up the wrong tree as he chastises the Rudd Government for putting foreign workers ahead of Aussies...

Offering Pacific islanders a temporary place in the Australian labour market is good policy, part of a new strategic vision.

Instead of playing the politics of fear, pandering to those who backed One Nation when its dumbbell leader Pauline Hanson was running amok, Brendan Nelson would be better placed offering constructive support for the Government's new foreign policy agenda.
The common market leads to neither Our Nation or One Nation, but to No Nation. The common market means the free movement of labour, as in the European Union. Regarding Fiji, what's the cause of that smouldering mess? The ethnic tension between Fijians and Indians. Indians who where brought there, ironically, as guest workers and then immigrants. Which is exactly where our guest worker and record immigration programs are headed - down the road of ethnic conflict. Steve Lewis and Labor will repeat Fiji's "smouldering mess" here in Australia.

Ford to cut 350 more Victorian jobs

August 22, 2008
Ford workers have pleaded for governments to assist the ailing car industry after another 350 job losses were announced at the company's Victorian plants.

The job losses, sparked by a downturn in demand for the large six-cylinder models produced locally, will take effect in November at Ford's Geelong and Broadmeadows plants.

A disappointed Australian Manufacturing Workers Union said this would bring the number of job losses in Victoria's car industry over the past three years to 4,500.

The AMWU also said there had been 100,000 manufacturing jobs lost across Australia in the past 10 years.

Two black female NYC cops pistol-whip man in road rage

August 19th 2008
Two off-duty female cops beat a man senseless, then fled and had to be tracked down and arrested like common criminals, authorities said Tuesday.

"I'm just happy to be alive right now," said Marlon Smith, who said he needed 25 staples in his head after the off-duty transit cops pistol-whipped him.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that if the charges were true, "it is a horrendous case, a horrendous situation."
Only in America? Maybe not, if the Big African Immigration Gamble advocates get their way here.

Two Curtin University students attacked and robbed

August 20, 2008
POLICE are investigating two robberies in 20 minutes near Curtin University yesterday morning when two students were threatened by a knifeman...

The offender is described as a dark-skinned male aged between 22 and 24, 185cm tall, of a slim build, with short black curly hair.
Reader comment
To me Curtin is not safe. There is a huge Aboriginal Faculty (federal funding for hundreds who get BA's in Aboriginal Studies) with a population of hangers- on who target Overseas students quite regularly. This means Campus Security is VERY sensitive about these stories..Overseas students are THE BIG MONEY for unis. Sick situation all round.

457 visas being processed faster: Evans

August 20, 2008
"Earlier this year, I directed the department to clear a backlog of about 13,000 temporary skilled migration visa applications on hand since March, many of which were outside the acceptable standards for processing," Senator Evans said.

"Applications for temporary skilled visas are now being processed faster and more efficiently at three new dedicated Centres of Excellence established in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne to deal with increasing demand by Australian companies for overseas workers to meet skills shortages."

... 110,570 visas were granted to temporary skilled workers and their dependents in 2007-08, up from 87,310 in 2006-07.

Firefighters and police officers arrived to find a car parked in the driveway of a home on David Street on fire.

Sheik Halaly mourns slain robber

August 21, 2008
CONTROVERSIAL Sheik Taj El-Din El Hilaly has attended today's Lakemba funeral for an armed robber shot dead during an attempted bank heist.

More than 200 mourners have gathered at Lakemba Mosque at midday to pay their respects to Kaled Dib, 25, who died after being shot in the chest by a security guard on Tuesday night.

Dib’s coffin, draped in a green cloth with Arabic writing on it, was carried in by crying mourners as a small uniformed police presence kept watch on the proceedings in Wangee Rd.

The street was blocked off for the procession, which was attended by Sheik Taj Din al Halali.
Kaled Dib had criminal past
... the dead would-be robber, Kaled Dib, 25, of Lidcombe, was convicted of assaulting two security guards at Parramatta's Albion Hotel earlier this year.

He also had unlicensed driving convictions from 2007 and police intelligence reports linked him to the drug trade, armed robberies and to criminals linked to armed robberies, police sources have confirmed.

Rudd signs first of Pacific development agreements

Aug 20, 2008
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has signed the first of a series of development agreements with Pacific Island nations.

Together for the Pacific Islands Forum in Niue, Mr Rudd and Papua New Guinea's Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare put their signatures to an agreement which Mr Rudd says will bring significant benefits to the country.

However, he also says Australia needs to see progress from all countries he will sign agreements with.

"This recasts our entire development assistance relationship with these countries on one core principle - mutual responsibility," he said.

"We'll continue to support these countries in a co-operative framework but on the condition that we see measurable improvement over time in the key development indicators...

This afternoon Mr Rudd will sign a similar agreement with Samoa and says he is working his way through six more agreements with countries in the region.

Rudd tries to right Australia’s Pacific sins

18 August 2008
Hamish McDonald (Sydney Morning Herald)
For most of their careers, Rudd and like-minded others in our Government and society have been working to reverse one of the great wrongs of Federation, the white Australia policy enforced in the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901, the first substantial law passed by the Commonwealth Parliament.

In Niue, Prime Minister Rudd is expected to start redressing the other big wrong of Federation, in the centenary year of its completion.

This was the deportation between 1904 and 1908 of 7078 “kanakas” working on the Queensland cane fields, the remnants of the mostly Melanesian indentured labour recruited in the dubious “blackbirding” trade...

Rudd will start the process of getting Pacific island workers back onto the farms, orchards and vineyards of Australia, if not the highly mechanised cane fields...

This is a region we can help - and help ourselves - only by a more open embrace, a wider involvement, and more people-to-people contact. This requires us to overcome our phobia and see the Pacific as a human resource, and an economic extension rather than a drag for Australia.

It’s a world that will get harder to shut out anyway. The solutions of the 1970s that seemed to get the region off our plate - independence, liberation thinking, foreign aid - are failing under the weight of population growth, urban drift, unemployment, crime, corruption, disease and climate change...

But we need a more layered view of where the Australian home stops, moving incrementally to a more regional approach where Pacific people can use the “main islands” of Australia and New Zealand to lift their lives, through seasonal labour, education and some settlement.
Oh, so not only do we also have to say 'sorry' to the Islanders, but we do this by surrending our country to them as well. I see it now: for most of their careers, Hamish and like-minded others in our media and society have been working to reverse one of the great wrongs of Federation - Australia.

Fair deals a Pacific pipedream

21/08/2008
Labour mobility may be in the headlines but as Kevin Rudd talks the talk at the Pacific Islander Leaders' forum in Nuie, he'll have one thing on his mind; trade.

Allowing Pacific workers to plug the holes in Australia's labour market is certainly a priority for Australia's farmers. But the real gain for Rudd lies in the bargaining power the scheme will give Simon Crean as he moves into the second phase of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Agreement negotiations, the free trade agreement Australia and New Zealand are negotiating with the Pacific countries.

At $5 billion, annual trade with the Pacific is relatively small from Australia's perspective. But for most Pacific countries, Australia remains their largest trading partner. Its dominance in the Pacific, however, is increasingly under threat from Asia's emerging economies and most recently by the European Union's efforts to establish an economic partnership agreement in the Pacific.

In an area traditionally considered Australia's ''backyard'', this has caused some concern and made the agreement a key priority for the Rudd Government.

The Pacific countries, however, are wary of the agreement, and with good reason. Reducing tariffs will make it difficult for local producers to compete alongside Australian imports, especially on products such as textiles, clothing and footwear...

Using such a scheme to pressure the Pacific countries into a free trade agreement opposed to their interests is only likely to increase resentment in the region.

Northern Territory proposes own guest worker scheme

August 21, 2008
Australia's Northern Territory government has proposed its own guest worker scheme, employing people from East Timor...

Under the scheme, East Timorese workers would live and work in the Northern territory for six weeks a year, earning between US$14-16 an hour...

He says similar requests to the previous Australian government were ignored...

The association's president Tom Harris says previous attempts to recruit Aboriginal workers have not worked...

"They're really looking for long-term employment options within community situations."
And there's the heart of the issue, the employment is not within community situations. That is the real problem: farms existing without supporting communities.

Call for Australia to be health travel destination

August 21, 2008
The Australian Tourism Export Council has appointed a panel to investigate the benefits and risks of offering international travellers beauty and spa treatments, counselling and some forms of elective surgery.

The council's managing director Matthew Hingerty says other countries are already in the market.

"We believe that we can model the development of health tourism in the same way that we have built education tourism into a $10 billion annual industry for Australia," he said.
Oh yes, we need even more foreigners here.

Labor gearing for mobile internationalisation of labour

May 17, 2008
"... the greatest modernisation of the architecture of the Australian economy ever contemplated in our peacetime history."

Rudd and Swan have launched a nation-building revolution invoking old but enduring Labor mythologies... It begins with the effort to expand and recast migration. In the 2008-09 budget, the total intake for immigration and temporary people movement is near 300,000, and this leap is just the start.

... Immigration Minister Chris Evans says Australia needs "a great national debate over the next few years" about the need to import not just skilled but semi-skilled and unskilled workers. "The system's creaking at the moment because it is unresponsive to new demands and new realities," he says.

... He wants a "serious overhaul" of the system. It is urgent because migration "is based on a model that is out of date", still anchored in the 1950s and '60s and not geared to the mobile internationalisation of labour in the 21st century.

"The demands of business are hitting us in the face," Evans says. His experiences as a West Australian aware of acute shortages and capacity constraints drives this urgency...

"The debate about temporary migration, quite frankly, is over." ...

The program's transformation will be a challenge for economic and social policy for trade unions, a test of Australia's racial and cultural maturity, and the next step in gearing the nation's labour market to global realities. It becomes a vital instrument in managing the resources boom.

In their first budget, Rudd and Swan did something they never promised: the biggest annual increase in migrants since the inception of the scheme...

Australian labour shortages are here to stay. They are driven by economics and demography. With the retirement of the baby boomers, limits to female workforce participation and the permanence of the China-India resources boom, immigration is returning to centre stage in dramatic fashion.

Evans stresses the dynamic of contemporary people movement. "Last year upwards of 500,000 people came into this country with working rights: holiday-makers, students and so on," he says. A further trend is onshore migration, whereby students and 457 visa holders convert to become migrants...

At the same time, habits of native-born Australians are changing. "We can't get Australians to work in abattoirs in rural Queensland," Evans says. "We've got Brazilian meat workers here who want to convert to migration, and their employers want this, too." ...

These reformist plans will stimulate the race debate.

"There's always, frankly, the race issue," he says. "One of the challenges is that source countries are changing. We still get 25 per cent of the program from Britain but we are seeing an increase from India, China, the Philippines and South America off a small base." He agrees it will be tricky to persuade the unions and the public to accept unskilled labour. But this is a debate Australia cannot avoid.
There goes the community. There goes the social cohesion. There goes relaxed and comfortable. Free trade isn't so free anymore. Society is an expendable instrument in managing the resources boom. Hands up who wants a resource boom now?

Chris Evans on John Howards' immigration legacy

May 17, 2008
Rudd builds on Howard's legacy. Evans says: "One of the ironies is that John Howard convinced the Australian public that he was a small-migration man with the rhetoric about 'who comes to this country'. But the migration program continued to grow under Howard." This understates the Howard phenomenon. After cutting the intake initially, Howard became a silent convert. Immigration doubled during his era from 82,000 in Keating's last year to 159,000 in Howard's final year. But Rudd, unlike Howard, cannot conceal what he is doing.
And then Asian immigrants voted Howard out. Goose.

Brigitte Gabriel on moderates and Islamification

August 18, 2008
What about all the moderate Muslims who represent our hope for the future? Why don't you write about them? The moderate Muslims at this point are truly irrelevant. I grew up in the Paris of the Middle East, and because we refused to read the writing on the wall, we lost our country to Hezbollah and the radicals who are now controlling it.

In your new book, you write about the Muslim presence in America and bemoan the rise of Islamic day schools and jihad summer camp. Is there really such a thing? Yes. Instead of taking lessons on swimming and gymnastics, the kids are listening to speakers give lectures titled "Preparation for Death" and "The Life in the Grave."

You also lament the public foot baths that have been installed at the University of Michigan and elsewhere to accommodate Muslim students. I lived in the Middle East for the first 24 years of my life. Never once did I see any foot-washing basins in airports or public buildings. So why are they pushing them down the throats of Americans?

I can't get upset if people want to wash their feet before they pray. This is the way they are taking over the West. They are doing it culturally inch by inch. They don't need to fire one bullet. Look what is happening in Europe. Do we want to become like "Eurabia"?

Spencer: After Musharraf, the Deluge

August 19, 2008
And that problem is not going to improve with the departure of Musharraf, for it is rooted in the power of Pakistan’s spy service, the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). General David D. McKiernan just last week accused the ISI of aiding the jihadists who have grown increasingly assertive in the border areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as in Afghanistan itself: “There certainly is a level of ISI complicity,” said McKiernan, “in the militant areas in Pakistan and organizations such as the Taliban.” He said that the ISI was “facilitating these militant groups that come out of the tribal areas in Pakistan.” Likewise, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai has for quite some time charged Pakistan with fomenting the jihad against his regime.

All of this is likely true: it’s entirely consistent with ISI’s record. The ISI, we must remember, was behind the formation of the Taliban government in Afghanistan when the Soviet Union withdrew its invasion force...

Terror Free Tomorrow polls conducted in August 2007 and January 2008 both found that a consistent level of about 75% of Pakistanis consider “implementing strict Sharia law throughout Pakistan” an “important” priority for the Pakistani government...

Pakistan’s leading exponent of political Islam, Maulana Sufi Muhammad, who was released from prison in May as a gesture of good will from the Pakistani regime, has announced that he will dedicate his efforts henceforth to implementing the fullness of Islamic law in the country. He may not find this a difficult task: one of the leading candidates to succeed Musharraf, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has supported legislation increasing the scope of Sharia law in Pakistan...

... the strong popular support for Islamic law in Pakistan is not going to disappear, and it will leave its mark on the next government. And that, in turn, will continue to strain the U.S./Pakistan alliance, as the imperatives of political Islam lead Pakistani officials to continue to obstruct and obfuscate anti-terror efforts -- or maybe even to aid them actively and openly. Before too long, American officials may be looking back on the corrupt and duplicitous Musharraf regime as the good old days.

Audio: paying to be permanent, ABC radio

17 August 2008 (Background Briefing - 50 minutes)
A high number of people who get Australian permanent resident visas don't get the skilled jobs they are trained for. And there are scams aplenty in the world of international students looking for any way to stay here.

Aboriginals and Abbott criticise guest worker scheme

August 20, 2008
THE powerful Kimberley Land Council says a Federal Government plan to import Pacific Islanders to pick fruit in rural communities is "shameful".

The council has thrown its weight behind Opposition indigenous affairs spokesman Tony Abbott, who says Aborigines will feel cheated when they see Pacific Islanders being paid to pick fruit while they languish on welfare...

"The kind of money which employers are putting up to bring them in and repatriate them would be much better invested in getting local Aboriginal people a start in the local economy," Mr Abbott told The Australian yesterday...

Kimberley Land Council boss Wayne Bergmann accuses the Government of taking "the easy option" instead of investing in its most disadvantaged citizens...

As Mr Mundine put it: "If you're going to fly people from the Pacific islands, what's wrong with flying people from Cape York, for instance. Or Karratha, or Melbourne, or Sydney, or Brisbane, or Nhulunbuy."

Video: near-riot at Auburn hospital after fatal shooting

Aug 20, 2008
Police have been forced to avert a near-riot outside a western Sydney hospital after a critically wounded man was dumped at the front door.

The 25-year-old died shortly after being discovered with a gunshot wound by Auburn Hospital staff at around 7pm.

It is alleged he and two masked accomplices had earlier tried to rob an armoured truck that was parked outside a supermarket in George St, Parramatta.

The two guards allegedly saw one of the men had a firearm and opened fire on the trio, who are said to have escaped in a white Mitsubishi with stolen plates.

As the dead man's family arrived at the hospital they were followed by a crowd of up to 100 young men who at one stage tried to storm the front door.

They were bailed up by police — including members of the Dog Squad — before older family members persuaded them to back away.
Looks Middle Eastern with a few headscarfs. The French riots exploded after immigrants were 'killed' by police. Ditto in Canada the other day. That's all it takes for the latent tension to go up in flames.

UPDATE:

August 20, 2008
RELATIVES of an armed robbery suspect shot dead by security guards say he was "the best guy in the world", the Daily Telegraph reported today.

Kaled Dib, 25, died after a shoot-out in one of the busiest streets in western Sydney last night after masked bandits tried to hold up Armaguard security guards delivering cash to the National Australia Bank on George St in Parramatta yesterday evening.

Farmers' suicide rates double national average

Aug 19, 2008
... a study by the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention has found the rate of suicide among farm workers, including farm owners and employees aged between 15 and 65, is more than double than that of the rest of the population...

The study used data from the Queensland Suicide Register between 1990 and 2004.

Ms Hawgood says the study proves the problem of suicide in farming communities is real, and needs to be addressed...

In recent years, farmers - particularly in the eastern states - have had to contend with tough conditions, including drought...

But there others in the agricultural sector who think the problem is far more complex.

"Farmers and farm workers live in a very isolated position, they are both physically and socially isolated from others, so if their thinking is getting shifted and they are under this stress or they are suffering any mental health condition, it's not so readily picked up by others," ...
Seems the rural community got left behind by globalisation. Community Supported Agriculture?

Prince Charles warns GM crops risk disaster

12/08/2008
The mass development of genetically modified crops risks causing the world's worst environmental disaster, The Prince of Wales has warned.

In his most outspoken intervention on the issue of GM food, the Prince said that multi-national companies were conducting an experiment with nature which had gone "seriously wrong".

The Prince, in an exclusive interview with the Daily Telegraph, also expressed the fear that food would run out because of the damage being wreaked on the earth's soil by scientists' research.

19 Aug 2008
About 6.30pm a cash-in-transit van was parked outside a supermarket in George Street, Parramatta, when three masked men, one carrying a firearm, threatened three armed guards.

Peacekeeper admits fighting at soccer match

August 19, 2008
A YOUTH worker honoured for his peacekeeping efforts in Melbourne's Somali community has admitted brawling at an under-18 soccer match.

Ahmed Dini was not only coaching the Flemington Eagles at the time -- he was also refereeing the game against the Western Eagles when an ugly fight broke out involving players and spectators.

Weapons including a knife, metal pole and baseball bat were used when spectators stormed the field following a wild tackle halfway through the first half. Dini, of Flemington, joined in the fracas and used a metal bar to assault a rival from the Western Eagles.

Racist row over Dandenong permit protest, VIC

18 Aug 08
The Sudanese Community Association of Australia has applied to Greater Dandenong Council to use a Bryants Rd venue for meetings, counselling, youth activities and educational programs.

But the permit has been delayed by six objectors, and two have angered local advocacy groups with their submissions.

One objection states: "They (Sudanese people) have shown a lot of violence in the past ... the youths gang up and cause trouble. I fear for the safety of myself and my family."

The other says: "The proposal could ruin the reputation of Dandenong."

Dave Taylor, from the Springvale Monash Legal Service, called the arguments "divisive, unqualified rhetoric"...
Well, if you voted for Labor and Liberal, then you got what you voted for. You voted for the Big African Immigration Gamble. Will it be peaceful? Will it be violent? Tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion. Or move house and vote smarter.

Gatecrashers flee whip-wielding dad, Sydney Nth

August 17, 2008
Dion Driman pulled out a South African sjambok when more than 30 youths attempted to storm into the party at the rear of his home at Wahroonga in Sydney's north.

Now he may face police charges for using excessive force to drive the youths from his home last Saturday night.

"I told them it was a private party and to clear off but this big youth put his face right into mine and said: 'make me'," said Mr Driman, 46...

His son Brennan said: "There were six or seven really big, buff guys on top of my dad, hitting him. I had to try and pull him out."

As he got clear Mr Driman started using the sjambok - a 1.5metre plastic whip like the traditional rhino hide whips used by South African herdsmen...

"People have had enough. This gang has been terrorising people whose kids are having parties for months now. Somebody needed to stand up to them."...

None of the youths could be identified and so no charges were laid.
Geez, the north used to be a good area. I know there are lots of Asians there now, but big buff guys?

Police hunt sex predator, Tweed Heads, NSW

August 19, 2008
Tweed Heads detectives are asking for community help to track down a man wanted in relation to two sexual assaults in the area since the start of the year... preying on young women as they leave local nightclubs...

In both cases, the attacker approached women he did not know and persuaded them to accompany him to a nearby party. He then dragged them into bushland and assaulted them...

He was described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance with dark hair, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, about 178-183cm tall and with a skinny build.

Chinese giant's $600m coal bid

29/07/2008
A GIANT Chinese coal company is apparently prepared to pay about $600 million to explore for coal near Gunnedah, outbidding BHP Billiton, Xstrata and at least four more Hunter coal companies in the process.

The China Shenhua Energy Company bid for the Watermark exploration area has stunned the coal industry...

Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan expressed concern recently about the amount of Chinese investment into Australia's resources sector, and the China Shenhua bid for Watermark is but one of these potential investments.

Watermark is next to the Caroona exploration area, where about 300 farmers and their supporters ran a blockade last week to keep BHP Billiton from drilling on private property.

Guest worker program may be expanded

August 18, 2008
Pacific nations are queuing up to take part in Australia's pilot guest worker program but will have to wait at least 18 months before Canberra considers expanding the scheme.

The government has confirmed it will offer 2,500 visas to workers from Tonga, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea to come to Australia for up to seven months a year to work in the horticultural industry.
August 19, 2008
For Australia, several industry sectors including transport, mining, health and aged services are experiencing shortages of high and low-skilled labour. The National Farmers Federation recently released a report restating its view that the sector requires an estimated 100,000 additional workers. The NFF has called for temporary entry for unskilled workers to fill an unspecified number of jobs (possibly 70,000) in industries such as horticulture. Given Australian demand for low and unskilled labour and the Pacific supply of young people wanting work experience and higher wages, one may wonder why there would be any opposition.
When you factor in the white flight from rural jobs, which will follow the arrival of guest workers, pretty soon you'll find that most rural jobs will be handed over to foreigners. Many white Australians will regard the rural industry as yet another no-go zone to avoid. The rural sector will become largely white farmers and their immigrant workers. Once again, the white community is left asking: is there any place to call home? Is there any native title for us? Social cohesion is bulldozed by economics.

Audio: farmers up anti-mining pressure on NSW Govt

19 August , 2008 - ABC radio
A group of farmers is warning the New South Wales Government they will do everything they can to stop mining in their region.

The Chinese company, Shenhua Energy, has approval to explore for coal near Gunnedah on the Liverpool Plains in the north-west of the New South Wales.

Local farmers want an independent water catchment study done, as they claim mining will contaminate water aquifers that are used for stock and domestic use...

Female gangs on the rise with more girl violence, NSW

August 15, 2008
GIRL violence has exploded across the state with an HSC student suffering multiple injuries during a savage bashing by a female gang.

Seventeen-year-old Julie-Anne Gill (pictured) needed a CT scan after complaining of dizzy spells five days after the brutal attack on a Friday night out...

Yesterday, her mother Rosemary blamed slack parenting and alcohol for the 20-minute attack on her daughter as police admitted assaults were on the increase...

"Their numbers are too overwhelming for police..." ...

The disturbing increase in hardcore violence by female school students was first revealed in The Daily Telegraph two years ago.

Documents obtained by this newspaper under Freedom of Information show teenage girls have threatened to stalk and bomb people, to harm school principals and have enlisted gangs to carry out revenge attacks.

NSW hospitals feel teen drinking heat

August 15, 2008
SYDNEY is in the grip of a teenage binge-drinking epidemic with an average of five youngsters a day being admitted to hospital with alcohol problems.

That represents a doubling - in a decade - in the number of teenagers needing treatment for extreme intoxication, alcohol poisoning or withdrawal.

The Daily Telegraph has obtained an alarming report from NSW Health showing a 100 per cent increase in the past seven years in admissions for alcohol-related problems in 15- to 19-year-olds.

Stabbing violence grips Sydney

August 05, 2008
SYDNEY is in danger of being engulfed in the type of knife violence gripping the UK, community leaders and victims said yesterday...

It comes as the Bureau of Crime Statistic imposed exorbitant fees to compile information about crime in NSW - which used to be free...

St Vincent's emergency chief Gordian Fulde said reports had shown a jump in stabbings: "In recent published literature, what we are seeing in hospitals is increasing in Sydney and Melbourne - it doesn't seem to be reflected in police statistics." ...

Tony Brosnan, whose student and friend Luke Hankey, 24, was stabbed to death in the carpark of a Central Coast pub after enjoying a drink with family and friends in October last year, had a stark warning.

"It's coming," he said of the stabbing violence in London.

"There is no discipline in society, as a teacher I have seen all the changes, there is no fear in kids any more..."

Both males are described as mid to late teens, of Asian appearance, with short black hair with white tips at the fringe...

Teenage girl king hit while waiting for mum, QLD

16th August 2008
Why would someone randomly attack a 15-year-old girl?

That is the question a Maroochydore mother would like answered after her daughter was punched from behind while waiting to be picked up from the Sunshine Plaza bus stop on Thursday night.

The teen – who did not want to be identified – had stepped away from friends to text message her mum, telling her she was ready to be picked up, when she was approached by four girls she did not know...

The blow, which fractured the top of her nose and broke her tooth, sent her to the ground...

The four girls, also believed to be aged in their mid-teens laughed and ran off.
Well, if you had told us the race of the offenders we could at least rule, in or out, racism as a motive. Instead, the mystery you leave us with is not the motive of the offenders, but the motive of 'journalists'.

Atrocity in Knoxville, 2007 - video

January 13, 2007 - VFR
I have to mention a terrible event: the carjacking and murder of Channon Christian, 21, and her boyfriend, Christopher Newsom, 23, in Knoxville, Tennessee last weekend. The killers shot Newsom and burned his body, then they held Christian a prisoner for several days, raping her repeatedly, then killed her. The suspects are two black predatory savages of the exact type we see over and over in newspaper stories of this nature, wandering about free in our society, ready to pounce. Look at the photos of the victims and of the suspects.

Could this have happened in pre-1960s America? No, and especially not in the South, because white society was frankly on guard against this very sort of thing, and held the black population under a rule and a discipline. That rule went too far, especially in the Jim Crow laws that required racial discrimination. But how tragic and ironic that because of white racial discrimination against blacks, and because of racial atrocities by whites such as the murder of Emmett Till, whites in a fit of liberal guilt went to the other extreme, erasing the consciousness of racial realities altogether, and thus rendering themselves, and especially their young women, naïve and innocent and helpless before black savagery. For decades, black murderers and rapists have been committing violent crimes against whites that in numbers and in pure savagery are orders of magnitude beyond anything that whites ever did or remotely imagined doing to blacks in the 1950s. Yet, far from taking measures to stop this racial phenomenon of black predation of whites, white society doesn’t even recognize its existence.

USA, violence against whites: a grim collection

August 12, 2008
Lawrence Auster
Black and other nonwhite violence against whites: a grim collection

In recent weeks, I have posted a great many articles on the ongoing outbreaks of black on white violence in this country and elsewhere--and not just "ordinary" criminal violence, but violence of a specifically savage and threatening character. Collected in this entry will be articles about black on white violence, as well as about Hispanic (or Mestizo) on white violence, and Asian on white violence (and even nonwhite on nonwhite violence, such as the wilding of the brother of black author Carol Swain). Inseparable from the above is the white naivete and passivity in the face of these attacks--what I call the Eloi syndrome. Of course whites also kill other whites in horrific ways, as at Columbine High School. The Columbine Massacre and the Knoxville Atrocity were equally symptomatic of our liberal culture, but they are different types of phenomena, and need to be treated under different categories.

There is no pleasure in compiling this list of articles. Even to glance over the relatively small number of titles accumulated so far is a disturbing experience. But these terrible things are happening, they seem to be happening more and more frequently, and for our own safety and survival we need to know about it, instead of ignoring it and covering it up as the mainstream media with the compliance of whites have been doing for the last 40 years. Nonwhite violence against whites, whether the perpetrators explicitly express a racial motive or not, is not just a very bad thing in itself that has increased from virtually zero a half century ago to an unending, low-level intifida today. It is the ultimate concretization of white America's (and other Western peoples') abandonment of its leadership position in its own land, and of its inclusion of, embrace of, and surrender to nonwhite and non-Western peoples. It is where the rubber meets the road on the path to national suicide...

The results of importing black students into a college town

August 13, 2008
Letter from a US police officer ...
I am a police officer in the upper northwest and have been a cop for 16 years. Like many in my current community, I came here originally to attend college. Our city is small and predominantly white, and the university population is mostly kids from white, upper middle class families.

Our university tries its damnedest to recruit and attract minorities, but the demographics seem to remain constant. Our local community college is a different story. They have been recruiting athletes from large urban areas for years and have contributed significantly to our community's young black population. It seems for every young black male recruited to play basketball or football, several male friends follow him from his community to ours. Subsequently, there are a large number of young, non-enrolled, unemployed black males living in our community.

One of the most obvious effects of this trend is the ghettoization of one of our older student neighborhoods. In the last twenty years, this multi-square block area has become almost exclusively subsidized housing, attracting the rest of our community's dysfunctional welfare class. This neighborhood abuts our university's east side and still houses many students. The predictable result of this is a significant increase in black on white crime...

The allure of black ghetto street culture amongst the white middle-class youth is a significant factor in this dynamic. There is an almost child-like expectation that the affection for that culture by the majority group will somehow be reciprocated when it plays out on street level, face-to-face encounters. It almost never is. It is amusing in a cynical way to see the repeated shock expressed by these white college kids when that affection is met with unrepentant violence. Whether it is the white male student who is beaten down for taking issue with a black male making a pass at his girlfriend, or the girl herself who is assaulted for rebuking such an advance, these kids are often attacked for just looking at a group of black males the wrong way...
And this won't happen here because ... ???

St. Louis, black gang attacks at train stations - Video

August 7th, 2008
St. Louis -- Police said they plan to increase security in the Loop in University City along with two Metrolink stations after a gang went on a rampage late last month. The group targeted passengers waiting for the train at the Delmar station and a family who had just left the Forest Park Metroink stop.
More African immigration please, we don't have enough of this diversity yet.

Brooklyn: mob of black savages beats ex-marines rescuing girl

August 11, 2008
A wolf pack of at least 30 thugs viciously attacked two hero ex-Marines in Brooklyn after they rescued a teenage girl who was being assaulted, police and witnesses said yesterday.

And when the brother of one of the former servicemen tried to come to his rescue during the July 25 melee in Coney Island, he was beaten into a coma.

The former leathernecks, Valentyn Olenyev, 23, and Boris Bukler, 22, Russian émigrés who served tours in Iraq, were walking a female friend to her parked car on West 23rd Street at 12:30 a.m. when they spotted two men holding the screaming teen by her hands and legs...

The two former Marines, meanwhile, insist that the violence had racial overtones...

Bukler said, "Those in the crowd were yelling, 'Hey, white boys, you're in the 'hood now!' We were yelling back, 'We don't care - we live here!'
Lawrence Auster ...
The Post does not mention the race of the attackers, but since their behavior--mob swarming over victims kicking them repeatedly in the head or beating them repeatedly on the head with deadly weapons--is virtually exclusively black behavior, and happening regularly in cities throughout America, we can assume with 99.9 percent certainty that the perps are blacks. Further, as I've said before, if anyone thinks it is racist, i.e., immoral, of me to write the phrase "black savages," my reply is that this phenomenon exists. Predatory "wilding" by mobs of blacks aimed at disfiguring, rendering brain dead, or murdering the victim is a regularly recurring behavior. How can society protect itself from these savage crimes if it refuses to recognize their existence and their nature--as well as their motivation, which in many cases is racial hatred of whites? Those who refuse to name this reality are the ones doing something immoral. To name it plainly is the moral thing to do.

In a Generation, Minorities May Be the U.S. Majority

August 13, 2008
Ethnic and racial minorities will comprise a majority of the nation’s population in a little more than a generation, according to new Census Bureau projections, a transformation that is occurring faster than anticipated just a few years ago.

The census calculates that by 2042, Americans who identify themselves as Hispanic, black, Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander will together outnumber non-Hispanic whites. Four years ago, officials had projected the shift would come in 2050.

The main reason for the accelerating change is significantly higher birthrates among immigrants. Another factor is the influx of foreigners, rising from about 1.3 million annually today to more than 2 million a year by midcentury, according to projections based on current immigration policies.

“No other country has experienced such rapid racial and ethnic change,” said Mark Mather, a demographer with the Population Reference Bureau, a research organization in Washington.

Flight of the dead from Detroit - Video

August 12, 2008
Flight of the dead: Suburban families move loved ones from Detroit cemeteries

... Detroit has lost half its population since its heyday of the 1950s, and every year the city hemorrhages an estimated 5,000 people more. First it was white flight to the suburbs; then with the city's continued spiral into poverty and violence, blacks began to flee to those same suburbs. And while census figures show that whites are returning to some of the nation's largest cities, Detroit is experiencing a flight of a different kind. As the Imbrunones' second funeral demonstrates, Detroit is experiencing the flight of the dead.

The movement of the dead from the nation's largest black city to its overwhelmingly white suburbs is a small, though socially symbolic phenomenon, revealing the grinding problems of race, crime and economics that plague both sides of Eight Mile.

From 2002 through 2007, the remains of about 1,000 people have been disinterred and moved out of the city, according to permits stored in metal filing cabinets in the city's department of health. Looked at in another way, for about every 30 living human beings who leave Detroit, one dead human being follows. Moreover, anecdotal evidence compiled by a Detroit professor suggests the figure may be twice as high, meaning city records may be incomplete and that thousands upon thousands of deceased people have been relocated from the city over the past 20 years.

Screening X-rays not enough for TB control

28 July 2008
Dr Linda Calabresi
Current screening for TB in migrants coming to Australia is inadequate, infectious diseases experts suggest.

Following their review (link) of laboratory confirmed TB cases in Victoria between 1990 to 2004, the researchers claim the results “raise the question of whether it is possible to eliminate TB from a low incidence country with ongoing immigration from high prevalence countries.”

Over the 15 year study period, there were 3191 confirmed cases of the disease, representing 77% of notifications, with the rate of cases rising by over 50% over the time.

Overall, more than 80% of these cases were in non-Australian born individuals, according to the Communicable Diseases Intelligence report. The highest proportion of non-Australian born cases have been from South East Asia, but the proportion of cases in people born African countries has been increasing, reflecting changing migration patterns.

Four charged over drug chemical import

August 15, 2008
A Sydney drug bust that uncovered 662 kilograms of pseudoephedrine hidden in fruit juice boxes is the latest move in a massive crackdown on Australia's illegal drug trade, police say.

Customs officers at Port Botany found the pseudoephedrine, estimated to be worth $52 million, in a shipping container from Thailand last Friday...

Daniel Saba, 29, from Oakhurst, is charged with importing and supplying a commercial quantity of the chemical precursor commonly used to manufacture the illegal drug ice.

Castle Hill man Eamad John Saba, 28, is charged with importing a commercial quantity of the chemical.

Yousef Jidah, 30, of Blacktown, and 21-year-old St Marys man Ryan Kapral both faced one count of supplying a commercial quantity of the precursor.

Reducing car tariffs 'makes no sense'

August 15, 2008
REDUCING tariffs on Australian-made passenger cars does not make any sense, the union representing manufacturing industry workers says.

The Bracks car industry review, released publicly today, recommends reducing tariffs on passenger motor vehicles from 10 per cent to 5 per cent by 2010.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union said no other vehicle-building country in the world was considering lowering tariffs on their locally-made cars.

Refugees need University's support, VIC

15 August 2008
A landmark report by Victoria University’s (VU) Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives (ICEPA) offers a best practice model for the tertiary education and training sector to improve access for refugees.

Report co-author and ICEPA Director, Associate Professor Danny Ben-Moshe, said the report calls for a systematic approach to educational service provision to help refugee students overcome the major barriers they face when seeking access to TAFE and Higher Education...

The best practice model recommended by the report includes:

* fee relief (most refugees say they cannot participate in education without this),
* support with transport (particularly in rural and regional areas),
* waver of materials costs,
* the provision of role models and mentors (ideally other refugees who have now settled and can appreciate the experience of new arrivals) and,
* understanding of, and assistance with, the diverse child-care needs of refugees.

Ben-Moshe said: “Refugee student needs have to be addressed holistically rather than just their educational needs. If the students are to achieve their educational outcomes institutions have to take into account their socio-economic and cultural circumstance and provide general life education services beyond the usual remit of an education provider.

“Educational institutions need to change the way they think and take on board the broader needs of the refugees, such as housing and child care. They can do this by having a liaison officer that works with the refugees and external bodies such as service providers...

“A program of cross-cultural training should also be implemented for TAFE and Higher Education teachers and other staff such as librarians, to inform them of the needs of refugees and appropriate responses.”

Sexual assault, Ipswich, four Sudanese men wanted

21st July 2008
This is the last picture of knife victim Freddy Moody taken just two hours before he was stabbed to death after a water pistol play fight apparently turned violent.

Freddy, 18, can be seen holding a harmless giant water pistol as he larks around with his friends in the photo taken at 4.48pm on Thursday...

But friends claim a row erupted with a gang and Freddy was killed yards from his home in Stockwell shortly after 7pm after going back to change his soaking clothes.

He was ambushed by a gang of up to eight who then escaped on bicycles...

Half of knife crime among children in London is committed by black youths, a highly sensitive Scotland Yard report claims.

Britain grapples with surge of knife attacks

Jul 19, 2008
On Friday police confirmed the death of an 18-year-old in south London, the 21st teenager to die of violence in the British capital this year...

"We have seen the emergence of a worrying trend in relation to knife crime," said Scotland Yard's Deputy Assistant Commissioner Alf Hitchcock.

"We see both an intensification in the severity of offending, and a worrying change in the age profile of offenders and victims, which has decreased from mid- to late-teens to early 20s down to early to mid-teens," he added.

Analysts say young people appear to be increasingly worried about their own safety... "They fear they're going to be attacked themselves," said Professor Gloria Laycock, from the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science, named after a well-known BBC television presenter who was shot dead on her doorstep in 1999.

Nike Air Stab trainer withdrawn after spate of knife murders

18 Jul 2008
The running shoes were originally sold in 1988 but a limited edition retro range was relaunched two years ago, carrying the phrase Runnin' 'n' Gunnin' on one version.

Although the sportswear company denied that the trainers glorified street violence, it said it had decided to stop selling them in light of the recent spate of stabbings.

A total of 53 people have been stabbed to death in London alone this year, many of them teenagers including 16-year-old Ben Kinsella whose death last month prompted a demonstration against knife crime.

Nike staff were themselves the victims 12 days ago when two security guards suffered knife wounds to the leg and back as they tackled a gang of shoplifters at the Niketown store in Regent Street, London.

A company spokesman said: "Given the current climate we have withdrawn the shoe indefinitely from Nike's own stores in the UK."

Detroit Prosecutor: Videogames Are 'Big Indicator Of Crime'

Dec 04, 2007
Detroit's plan to cut crime? Crack down on violent videogames.

Games are a "big indicator of crime," says Kym Worthy, prosecuting attorney for Wayne County, which encompasses Detroit -- which a recent Congressional Quarterly study called America's "most dangerous city."

"No one can convince me that there isn't a link between some of the gory, gritty, horrendous crime that we've been seeing in the past few years, particularly in the 18-25 year old group, [and] these games," ...

This week, Worthy released a list of ten games she thinks parents should avoid buying for their children this holiday season. It includes games such as Grand Theft Auto and Scarface.

Worthy says that she has seen "copycat crimes" in Detroit that "mimic" videogames.

"I'm telling you, things are getting much more gory, much more horrific...I'm not saying it's the only link, I'm not saying that it's a direct link, but it's there," she says.

Worthy puts out her list every year to help warn parents about the type of games their children might be playing. All of the games on the list are M-rated, and therefore not actually intended for children, but Worthy brushes such arguments aside.

"That means nothing to me really, because we have kids playing these games who are under the age of being mature," she says.

Worthy writes off any arguments that violent games are a way to act out aggression in a safe environment. These, she says, are "silly" arguments made to justify a "billion-dollar industry based on the most violent of scenarios."

"Why can't they just go play football?" she asks. "I dont understand why anyone would want to be a part of glorifying violence."

The use of the word "game" to describe something like Manhunt, she says, is "very disturbing."

"A game to me is Candyland, Monopoly, the games we used to play as a child. Scrabble. These are games."

To compile the list, Worthy had Detroit-based "community research group" Hood Research poll members of the Detroit community about the violent games they played and wanted.

Other games on Worthy's list include 50 Cent Bulletproof, God of War, and 300...

... Worthy did say that Grand Theft Auto belongs at the top of the list because of its glorification of "carjacking" and other violent crimes.

Worthy says she finds the ability to kill a prostitute after engaging her services in GTA particularly abhorrent. "It rewards you, give you points for mistreating the woman after you've had your way with her," she says.
Talkin sense.

Atlanta: teen blames GTA for firebombings

08/07/08
Milton police on Thursday arrested three teenagers on 57 felony counts connected to the firebombing of three cars with Molotov cocktails devices one boy said he learned to make by playing the Grand Theft Auto computer game.

...Seven Molotov cocktails were made. Two Mercedes and one Honda Accord were burned, three devices missed their target and one was found unused.

Grand Theft Auto is a computer game series that has been blamed for inciting juvenile crime sprees in the United States and globally, including murder and carjacking, police said.

"This case is another strong example of the serious ramifications that can come from letting impressionable teens play violent video games like this one," Lagerbloom said. "We urge parents to pay particular attention to their children's extracurricular activities and to intervene before it's too late."

Street brawl: armed Sydney teens charged

August 13, 2008
Five teens charged over a street brawl were found sitting in a car with a shortened firearm, a samurai sword and a hunting knife, police say.

Police were called to a street fight at the intersection of Palisade Crescent and Bunker Road, Bonnyrigg, in Sydney's south-west, about 12.30am, police said.
Closing 'crime corridor'
13 August, 2008
FAIRFIELD police will target specific areas through Operation Reclaim, a three-month operation aiming to reduce crime.

The operation, launched on August 1, involves police patrolling the Stockland mall and Bonnyrigg Plaza area, and the 5km road between the two shopping malls, known to police as the "corridor of crime".
Fairfield is diverse: Asians, Lebs, and a whole lot more. This smells of the surge mentality in Iraq: yeah it might help for a while, but is there any hope of a permanent force of good taking control?
