Racist row over Dandenong permit protest, VIC

18 Aug 08
The Sudanese Community Association of Australia has applied to Greater Dandenong Council to use a Bryants Rd venue for meetings, counselling, youth activities and educational programs.

But the permit has been delayed by six objectors, and two have angered local advocacy groups with their submissions.

One objection states: "They (Sudanese people) have shown a lot of violence in the past ... the youths gang up and cause trouble. I fear for the safety of myself and my family."

The other says: "The proposal could ruin the reputation of Dandenong."

Dave Taylor, from the Springvale Monash Legal Service, called the arguments "divisive, unqualified rhetoric"...
