African students dig agriculture, West Sydney

12 August, 2008
AFRICAN refugees are enjoying getting their hands dirty as they learn the rudiments of agriculture the Australian way at Richmond TAFE.

The pilot project not only aims to make the Sudanese and Burundi students competent in agriculture but also helps them find jobs when they graduate...

Mr Turner, who is a hands-on mentor, said several of his previous students had graduated but been unable to find jobs in the industry which had a skills shortage. This time around, TAFE Outreach program is trying to fix this problem.

"We want to handle the job search a bit different and besides the two teachers handling this group, another is working closely on the employment side," Richmond TAFE Outreach co-ordinator Denise Newton said.
Don't forget to send around the heavies - Eddy McGuire, Lindsay Tanner or Helen Szoke - to the employers. I'm sure they're ignorant of their own subtle racism.
