A day after police praised schoolies' calm behaviour, fighting broke out on the streets of Surfers and within the fenced-off Schoolies Hub as revellers let loose for the first time...

Supt Keogh denied there were any gang or race-affiliated scuffles despite police arresting several men of African descent.

"Last year we had problems with Sudanese versus Maori fights but we have been monitoring CCTV and haven't seen anything that is thought to be gang-affiliated or with racial overtones," he said.
