Teenage girl king hit while waiting for mum, QLD

16th August 2008
Why would someone randomly attack a 15-year-old girl?

That is the question a Maroochydore mother would like answered after her daughter was punched from behind while waiting to be picked up from the Sunshine Plaza bus stop on Thursday night.

The teen – who did not want to be identified – had stepped away from friends to text message her mum, telling her she was ready to be picked up, when she was approached by four girls she did not know...

The blow, which fractured the top of her nose and broke her tooth, sent her to the ground...

The four girls, also believed to be aged in their mid-teens laughed and ran off.
Well, if you had told us the race of the offenders we could at least rule, in or out, racism as a motive. Instead, the mystery you leave us with is not the motive of the offenders, but the motive of 'journalists'.

Police to deal with gang culture, Brisbane

August 06, 2008
Of particular concern were ethnic and race-based threads running through some gangs, a source said.

The St Laurence's attack has been linked to the South Brisbane-based Jay Jays gang, believed to include Asian, Pacific Islander and Bosnian members.

Police intelligence does not suggest race has become a major factor in gang culture but there are worries economic stagnation could split disaffected youth along such lines.

Eight teenagers have been charged over last week's attack but The Courier-Mail understands up to 15 members of the gang were at the school...

The Courier-Mail has documented up to a dozen named gangs on the Gold Coast alone.

They are tightly knit groups identified by colours and tattoos, with some linked to criminal gangs.

Other areas of Brisbane have their versions of American gangs the Bloods and the Crips, or have gangs named after their suburbs or ethnic groups.
Come on, it's nothing to do with economic stagnation, it's just ethnic gangs pure and simple.

A PACK of more than 20 youths, some as young as 10, celebrated after a violent street attack on an off-duty police officer and his partner at Coolangatta yesterday...

A male youth then king-hit the officer while another kneed him. As he fell to the ground, the officer was repeatedly kicked and punched by members of the group.

The youths later gave each other celebratory "high-fives" as the officer and his girlfriend lay bleeding on the concrete footpath. A girl then kissed one of the youths who had punched the officer...

Residents living next to the South Bank Parklands have witnessed late-night gang clashes involving more than 50 ethnic teens...

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson yesterday said he was worried about a "slippage" in youth violence affecting the quality of life for Queenslanders.

Inspector Greg Carey, crime manager for the Tweed-NSW police command, said youth gangs were flourishing. "There is no doubt it's a phenomenon that is rapidly escalating in this country," Insp Carey said...

... community officials and police confirm youth gangs, some sporting red and blue bandannas, and claiming allegiance to US-based Crips and Bloods gangs, exist in some Brisbane suburbs...

TENSIONS between local and Brazilian surfers threaten to reach boiling point, with reports of heated arguments at surfing breaks and even a knife incident.

Brazilian and local surfers are frequently abusing each other to secure the best waves at crowded beaches.

Duranbah, Snapper Rocks, Currumbin Alley and Burleigh Point have been the main areas where clashes have occurred.

Seven charged with St Laurence's School stabbing

July 29, 2008
Zinajdo Hasanovic, 17, of Wooloongabba and Kael Leahy, 18, of Kallangur, were both denied bail after Magistrate Elizabeth Hall heard what she described as "frightening" accounts of one of the boys attacking school students with a meat clever...

“There was some dispute between the groups.” ...

"We've always tried to keep him safe right through his life. It's completely unexpected to think this could happen in what we feel is one of the safest schools."

"Really it just points out that no-where is safe."
The two denied bail appear to be a Bosnian and an Aboriginal/Islander.

Two knifed in gang invasion at Brisbane school

July 28, 2008
The student said he and other St Laurence’s students believed the alleged attackers were purportedly members of a Brisbane southside gang called "JJs".

“It was guys from the local gang,” he said... “But they didn’t get the guy they wanted … that’s why they’re calling it unprovoked," the student said...

"This is such a good school, with a good reputation you know...I can't believe something like this has happened.
